About me… hmmm… where to start. Ok – my interest in technology, internet, and website design all started when AOL first launched as an ISP. This was the beginning of the internet craze. EVERYONE had to have AOL. I would come home from school and immediately hop online and check out all kinds of things. Email, chatting, websites – everything was so new and exciting. How was it possible that I was able to sit at my computer in a small town and chat with someone half way across the country? This concept was amazing to me. That was the point when I decided that I wanted to learn everything I could about internet and computers in general.
As you get a little older and become jaded by life experience, you tend to lose that motivation and enthusiasm you once had at 12. Truth be told, I never did. I was always the one people came to when they needed help with computer programs, spreadsheets, word documents, or internet research. I was the go-to gal. I spent any and all spare time teaching myself how to use a new computer program, learning more about the programs I already knew how to use, and reading about them on the internet. I found great resources (I still frequent today) that helped me to pick up this knowledge.
Flash forward about 10 years and here I am. I’ve spent the last 8 years out in the workforce trying to gain as much life experience as possible – meanwhile soaking up as much technical knowledge as I can. For the last 3 years I’ve been working at an investment company and in my current role I update/manage/create content for the company’s public website. This position has really helped me to hone in on the technical skills that were self-taught for many years.
So (you might ask) – how did you get into blogging, website design, and all things technology? When the market crashed in 2008, we fell on hard times. My husband lost his job and was home all day for several months. (I should mention — he is the type of man who has to constantly be doing something or he goes stir crazy.) He had always talked about starting a survival business that taught people how they could fend for themselves with limited resources if they found themselves in a survival situation. So – since we didn’t have the money to start a business, I suggested that we create a website where he could put useful information about survival and be more of the “survival guru”. This was only supposed to be a creative avenue for him to put energy in to while he was job searching (plus it was fun).
I had never built a website before from scratch and thought that this was the perfect opportunity to learn. I created the site and maintained it while my husband provided content, input, feedback, etc. Before long Traveler’s Woods had circulated to friends and family all over the country and they really enjoyed reading what we put out there. I was updating it constantly so I could learn more about different site builders.
Before I knew it, people were asking me to build sites for them left and right. Then I went to dinner with some friends and they asked me why wasn’t I building websites for a living? At first I thought they were crazy – I wasn’t website developer, didn’t have a degree in computer science or anything fancy like that. How in the world could they think I’d be able to do this? Then I got to thinking… why couldn’t I do this? I had always been passionate about technology, the internet, and learning new things. What would it take? So I did the research and created MKB Designs.
Since then I’ve been networking, meeting new folks, and taking on new exciting projects. I’ve created a few blogs and am trying to build a network of equally tech-savvy geeks to share their experiences, knowledge, and news with the world. My goal is to impart any new information about technology or tech products, and to put a “freshly-squeezed” spin on it.
Welcome to Fresh Squeezed Tech—the place to get technology news and information from a freshly-squeezed point of view.
