Distinguishing OC from LA – 1/22/20

by Neal Bloom
Last newsletter , I ranted about OC being lumped into LA, and I have since learned why it’s so prevalent.
MSAs, or Metropolitan Statistical Areas, are common economic regions that have been decided by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). These are regions that have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 people. For instance, for LA/OC, the MSA is determined as Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana. In San Diego, it is San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos. In either case, for our LA/OC MSA,  Pitchbook has data  showing that the number of deals and total VC dollars are down in 2019 compared to 2018. This is not an LA/OC only thing. We  see the same  in San Diego. My plan is to do an OC-only deep dive on every deal of 2019 and present it here shortly with any findings.
Is that of interest?
Cheers,
